Mark Heenan is an active member of the Ocean Grove community through his association with the Ocean Grove Voice newspaper in his role as sports reporter. He has played Bellarine Football League reserves grade football at the Ocean Grove Football Netball Club and reported on the Grubbers' footy fortunes for a decade with his work at the Ocean Grove Voice and Geelong Advertiser publications. Equally Mark, has donned the whites for Ocean Grove Cricket Club in 2015/16 and played across three divisions in B, C and D cricket grades and reported on the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association for a decade in the Ocean Grove Voice. He worked as a volunteer teaching assistant at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School in Ocean Grove in 2016. He is an enthusiastic member of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and completes his bronze medallion surf re-qualification award on an annual basis. In early 2016, he joined the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club Rip to River Classic sub-committee as a media and marketing consultant. He is a regular running competitor at the Rip to River Classic. Part of his sub-committee role was to obtain a suitable race ambassador for the event. On 1 December 2016, it was announced Australian Diamonds' Netballer Tegan Philip, a Geelong and Surf Coast based local, as the new ambassador for the 37th Rip to River Classic. Mark was also elected to Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club swim sub-committee as a press consultant for the club's inaugural K rock Ocean Open Water Swim Festival on Sunday 29 January 2017. On 7 September 2016, Ocean swim king Sam Sheppard was announced as the ambassador for K rock Ocean Open Water Swim Festival. Sheppard is a seven-time winner of Australia's largest Ocean Open Water swim the prestigious Pier to Pub in Lorne.
In the Geelong region, Mark was also presented with a Geelong Chamber of Commerce new member welcome at The Pier Waterfront in Geelong on 22 September 2016 as part of business Mark Heenan Media. Mark Heenan Media is a member of the Geelong Chamber of Commerce, one of Australia's leading business bodies, which boasts more than 900 members. He was appointed Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association News Corp Press Officer for the 2016-17 season.
